Algol binary Created 2026-09-28 Updated 2026-10-05
An Algol binary is a semidetached binary in which an evolved, less massive donor star fills its Roche lobe while its more massive mass gainer remains near the main sequence. Binary mass-ratio reversal resolves the Algol paradox. Eclipsing members commonly have Algol variable light curves, but that observational class also includes detached systems.
