The balloon inflation hydraulic time constant is the response scale produced by combining an inflation path's hydraulic resistance with a balloon's balloon volumetric compliance. It characterizes a stated fluid-mechanical model; it is not a universal inflation duration for a balloon catheter.
Let be a maintained source pressure, balloon pressure relative to a fixed exterior, a linear path resistance and constant compliance. Conservation of injected volume gives
Thus . The product has units . Reaching a fraction of the pressure change takes , so and .
For chosen values and , and the modeled time is . Under the Hagen-Poiseuille equation for a rigid circular lumen, . Reducing radius to raises resistance, and hence this time constant, by if the other assumptions remain valid.
The motivating apparatus is the separate catheter balloon inflation lumen joining the inflation port to the balloon. The EAUN two-channel description distinguishes it from the drainage lumen.[ref] A bench test that records source pressure, local balloon pressure and injected volume can distinguish a channel pressure drop from stored volume response. This is an experimental model outline, not a clinical operating protocol.
Pressure-dependent compliance gives , generally with no single exponential. Apparatus storage, trapped gas, moving external pressure or a deformable lumen can also alter the response. A balloon compliance fixture correction measured only after equilibration need not describe distributed transient storage.
Balloon volumetric compliance is the local change in balloon volume per change in a specified pressure difference, with the mechanical state and other conditions defined:
It has units of volume per pressure. It differs from diameter response in a balloon pressure-diameter curve and from a fractional volume response .
For an illustrative cylindrical region whose length can also change,
The second term vanishes only when length is held fixed. A diameter-only observation does not otherwise determine the whole volume response.
The Nipro chart gives and for its nominal balloon at labeled rows and .[ref] Using those diameters in a chosen fixed-length cylinder gives the finite-interval estimate
The assumed cylinder is not a measured manufacturer balloon volume. The calculation illustrates why a finite volume change differs from substituting one endpoint diameter into a local derivative.
A balloon compliance fixture correction separates the balloon from the measurement apparatus. In a simple quasistatic model where both experience the same pressure increment, measured injected-volume response can be . A blank or independently characterized fixture is needed before assigning the entire response to the balloon.
Pressure reference, external constraint, loading history, temperature and equilibration also belong to the definition. Hysteresis can give different paths on inflation and deflation. Compliance describes a response in the stated regime; it does not alone supply a rupture pressure or a failure probability.
