A classification-based information confidentiality model restricting subject accesses to prevent forbidden information flow. The simple security property restricts reading above clearance; the Bell-LaPadula star property restricts information flow through current reads and writes. It is not a complete data integrity policy.
The Bell-LaPadula model restriction that a subject operating at its current level reads only at or below that level and writes only at or above it. An access combining both operations therefore requires equal levels. Safe changes of current level must also control retained information.
The Bell-LaPadula model restriction that a readable object's classification must not exceed the subject's maximum clearance.
