There is an uncountable cardinal number κ with σκ=κ. Iterate κn+1=σκn starting with ℵ0. If there is no earlier fixed point, the increasing supremum κ has countable cofinality, hence is a singular cardinal. The singular cardinal enumeration is cofinal in κ below index κ, and continuity at this singular supremum gives equality.
