Compactifications. A Hausdorff compactification of is a compact Hausdorff space together with a topological embedding having dense image. We identify with that image.
For noncompact locally compact Hausdorff , adjoin and give its one-point compactification topology: retain the open sets of , and take , with compact, as a neighborhood base at . Compact subsets are closed, making this a topology with the original subspace topology on .
An open cover contains a neighborhood of , leaving a compact subset of to cover by finitely many more members. Hence is compact. Points of are separated using its Hausdorff property; to separate from , use local compactness to choose an open with compact closure and take at . Finally every neighborhood of meets , because itself is not compact. Thus is dense and is a Hausdorff compactification with one-point remainder.
Comparison maps. The Stone-Čech compactification of a Tychonoff space has the universal property that every continuous map from to a compact Hausdorff space extends continuously to . Applying it to any Hausdorff compactification gives a continuous surjection fixing . Surjectivity follows because its compact image is closed and contains the dense set .
We need the fibers of compactification comparison maps propertySuppose with . By regularity of compact Hausdorff , choose an open neighborhood of with . The embedding supplies open containing and satisfying . The open set contains . Density of implies , a contradiction. Thus the displayed identity holds.
Equivalence of (a), (b), (c). Clearly (b) implies (c). If (c) holds in , inverse images under and show that is a G-delta set in , giving (a). Conversely assume (a) and write in . The sets are compact and miss . Their images are closed in and miss by the fiber identity. Since is onto, they exhaust . HenceThis proves (b), for every . This G-delta compactification invariance defines a Čech-complete space.
The Baire property. Suppose in a compact Hausdorff , with dense and all open. Each is dense. For dense open subsets of , choose open with . Every nonempty open subset of meets in a nonempty relatively open set and hence meets , so each is dense in .
The assumed Baire category theorem in makes dense in . This set lies in and equals , so it is also dense in . Therefore Čech-complete spaces are Baire spaces.
Enumerate . Each is open and dense in , while their intersection is empty. Thus is not a Baire space, and consequentlyIf were a G-delta set in , it would also be one in : the subspace is open in its one-point compactification, and adjoining that open condition to a countable intersection preserves the G-delta set property. Since is dense in and hence in , this would be a Hausdorff compactification of contradicting the preceding conclusion. Therefore .
