Citrate denotes an ion derived from citric acid. The commonly specified form has electric charge equal to that of three electrons and chemical formula ${\mathrm{C}}_6{\mathrm{H}}_5{\mathrm{O}}_7^{3-}$; it results from removing three hydrogen ions from citric acid. Forms with additional hydrogen ions attached through protonation also occur. ^[ref]
