For a photon scattered through angle θ by an initially stationary free electron, exact relativistic conservation of energy and conservation of momentum give λ′−λ=(h/mec)(1−cosθ). Backscatter gives the maximum shift, 2h/(mec), independent of the initial photon wavelength.
