When a productive stock pays dt before trading at ex-dividend price St, an investor entering with θt shares receives dtθt and sells or buys shares to leave with θt+1. The displayed budget constraint accounts for the available consumption and the cost of the new holding. Here θt is known before date t, while Ct and θt+1 may depend on the information revealed at that date.
