Dispersive wave
= Dispersive wave
A wave whose phase speed depends on frequency. In a one-dimensional branch, phase velocity is $\omega/k$ and the narrow-packet <group velocity> is $d\omega/dk$. Loss, mode conversion and broad spectral bandwidth require care before identifying group speed with energy or signal transport. Confinement can create dispersion even when the underlying unbounded material has a constant wave speed.
