A wave whose phase speed depends on frequency. In a one-dimensional branch, phase velocity is ω/k and the narrow-packet group velocity is dω/dk. Loss, mode conversion and broad spectral bandwidth require care before identifying group speed with energy or signal transport. Confinement can create dispersion even when the underlying unbounded material has a constant wave speed.
