Endoscopy Created 2026-10-31 Updated 2026-11-05
Endoscopy examines an internal space using an instrument that carries illumination and a viewing system into that space. A flexible instrument can transmit images from the digestive tract, while other forms examine different anatomical regions. Direct visualization and a biopsy answer different questions: a visible change describes appearance, whereas a tissue sample can support microscopy or molecular analysis. Some examinations combine both kinds of evidence. [ref]
