Ultraviolet subdivergence 2026-10-14
An ultraviolet subdivergence arises when loop momenta internal to a proper subgraph tend to infinity while the momenta entering that subgraph are held fixed. It can occur even if simultaneous scaling of all momenta of the full Feynman diagram is convergent. Recursive local counterterms subtract these subgraph divergences before the remaining overall divergence is analyzed. A tadpole diagram inserted into an otherwise convergent six-point phi-fourth theory Feynman diagram is a simple massive example.
Wick contraction Created 2026-09-28 Updated 2026-10-14
A Wick contraction replaces a selected pair of free fields by their two-point function. Summing pairings computes Gaussian correlation functions and supplies the propagator lines and combinatorial factors of a Feynman diagram.
Wick's theorem 2026-10-14
Wick theorem expresses a time-ordered product of free fields as its normal-ordered product plus the sum over every possible contraction. It turns the Dyson series into Feynman diagrams.
