For a group homomorphism φ:G→H, two inputs give the same output exactly when φ(h−1g)=eH. Consequently the fibre over an output φ(h) is the left coset hkerφ. These cosets identify precisely the inputs indistinguishable to φ, which is the mechanism behind the first isomorphism theorem.
