For an ample line bundle on a noetherian scheme , every coherent sheaf becomes a globally generated sheaf after tensoring with for all sufficiently large . Finitely many global sections suffice by finite global generation on a quasi-compact scheme. This is the global-generation characterization of an ample line bundle.[ref]

For a closed subscheme of projective space, take . One way to see why twisting helps is to choose finitely many module generators on each standard affine open subscheme. Multiplication by a sufficiently high power of its homogeneous coordinate extends each generator to a global section of a twist. Choose one exponent for all generators. On the original chart that coordinate is invertible, so these extended sections still generate; doing this for every chart proves global generation. Tensoring back by the inverse invertible sheaf gives a surjection from a finite direct sum of sheaves of negative twists onto .
The displayed line bundle is globally generated, but no finite family of global sections generates it. A family of sections restricts to linear forms on ; for , these have a common zero. This shows why finite global generation on a quasi-compact scheme requires its finiteness hypothesis.

Write over its ground field; the argument also works over any Noetherian affine base. Since is a closed immersion, is a noetherian scheme and a quasi-compact scheme. LetHere the pullback of a sheaf of modules makes an invertible sheaf, the restriction of the twisting sheaf on projective space. It is an ample line bundle.
By global generation by sufficiently positive twists, choose such that is a globally generated sheaf. Finitely many global sections suffice: at each point, finite generation of the stalk of the coherent sheaf lets us select finitely many generating germs of global sections. Those sections generate on a neighbourhood, because their cokernel sheaf is a coherent sheaf with zero stalk at that point. A finite subcover, using that is a quasi-compact scheme, supplies finitely many global sections generating everywhere. This is finite global generation on a quasi-compact scheme, and gives a surjective sheaf morphism
Tensor with , where is the dual of a sheaf. Here tensoring with an invertible sheaf is exact: locally the tensor product of sheaves is tensoring with a free module of rank one. Using the permitted identity , we obtainA finite direct sum of sheaves of invertible sheaves is a locally free sheaf of finite rank, and it is a coherent sheaf on the noetherian scheme . This constructs the required . No regularity or smoothness assumption on is needed.

A line bundle is a globally generated line bundle when the evaluation mapis surjective. Equivalently, its global sections span each fibre of the line bundle; locally at every point, some section is a generator.
Choose a finite generating family . On the open set where generates , the ratios are regular functions, giving a morphism of schemes into the standard chart of projective space. The ratios obey the usual transition rules on overlaps, so these chart maps glue toThe tuple is computed using any local trivialization of ; changing that trivialization multiplies all entries by the same invertible function. The construction has and pulls back the coordinate sections to the chosen .
There is a finiteness qualification for an arbitrary : global generation alone need not provide such a finite family. It does if is quasi-compact, since the open sets on which individual sections generate have a finite subcover. Without that hypothesis, take and let restrict to on each component. This line bundle is globally generated, but any global sections have a common zero on a component with . Thus this is a globally generated line bundle without finite generators. This is finite global generation on a quasi-compact scheme. The finite-family construction is automatic in the projective case asked next.
For projective nonsingular , put . The length-two criterion for a very ample linear system says that is a closed immersion precisely when, after extending to an algebraic closure, separates distinct points and tangent directions. Equivalently, the evaluationis surjective for every length-two geometric closed subscheme . Two distinct points give point separation; a nonreduced length-two subscheme supported at one point gives separation of a direction in the Zariski tangent space. For the complete space , this says exactly that is a very ample line bundle. For a chosen smaller , it is the chosen linear system of divisors which must be a very ample linear system; mere global generation is insufficient.
