Gamma-tocopherol 2026-11-05
Gamma-tocopherol is the 7,8-dimethyl form of tocol. ChEBI gives its molecular formula as and average molar mass as .[ref] It shares a formula with beta-tocopherol, whose additional aromatic methyl groups occupy positions 5 and 8.
The pair consists of constitutional isomers: changing an attachment position changes connectivity without changing elemental composition. A measurement that establishes only the molecular formula cannot distinguish the two. Nor can their equal molar masses justify assigning all of a combined signal to one form.
Consider an original illustrative chromatography result with resolved, identified gamma and beta peaks. Suppose their integrated signals are 18 and 12 arbitrary units, and the respective calibration sensitivities are 3 and 2 signal units per micromole. ThenThe gamma mole fraction is one half, although its uncorrected signal fraction is . Detector response must be calibrated before peak fractions become composition fractions. The chosen sensitivities are hypothetical, not reported properties of a detector or of these compounds.
A further structural distinction is side-chain saturation: gamma-tocopherol is a tocopherol, whereas a gamma member of the tocotrienol family carries additional side-chain double bonds. Ring substitution and chain unsaturation are independent information in the chemical name.
