For a family of affinely parametrized geodesics with tangent $U$ and connecting field $J$, the Jacobi equation in the convention used here is
$$
\nabla_U\nabla_UJ=R(U,J)U.
$$
It describes the relative acceleration produced by spacetime curvature.
