The Heisenberg model couples neighboring or more general pairs of spins through $\boldsymbol\sigma_i\mathbin{\cdot}\boldsymbol\sigma_j$. For all-to-all equal coupling, the Hamiltonian can be written in terms of the square of the total spin.
