A <heterotrimeric G protein> is a signaling assembly with $\alpha$, $\beta$ and $\gamma$ subunits. Receptor-promoted nucleotide exchange on $\alpha$ regulates interactions with $\beta\gamma$ and effectors; both signaling components can contribute downstream.
