Each point on a <wavefront> acts as a source of secondary wavelets, whose envelope gives the next wavefront. The geometric construction gives <refraction from secondary wavelets>. The <Huygens-Fresnel principle> additionally keeps the amplitudes and phases needed to calculate <interference> and <diffraction>.
