Each point on a wavefront acts as a source of secondary wavelets, whose envelope gives the next wavefront. The geometric construction gives refraction from secondary wavelets. The Huygens-Fresnel principle additionally keeps the amplitudes and phases needed to calculate interference and diffraction.
