<Image segmentation> divides an <image signal> domain into regions according to a chosen criterion, such as approximately constant or smoothly varying intensity. The <Mumford–Shah segmentation model> balances fidelity, within-region smoothness and <image edge> length. An intensity segmentation need not coincide with semantic object identities.
