Image segmentation divides an image signal domain into regions according to a chosen criterion, such as approximately constant or smoothly varying intensity. The Mumford–Shah segmentation model balances fidelity, within-region smoothness and image edge length. An intensity segmentation need not coincide with semantic object identities.
