Inertial instability occurs when displaced fluid parcels amplify their displacement by conserving absolute momentum in a rotating flow. For a uniformly stratified basic state on an <f-plane>, a necessary condition is that the <Ertel potential vorticity> have the opposite sign to the <Coriolis parameter>.
