A physicist whose work on fluid mechanics linked mathematical models with measurements of turbulence. He used an anemometer with a heated wire to probe velocity fluctuations and studied Burgers' equation, a simplified nonlinear equation that retains competition between wave steepening and viscous smoothing. The simpler equation makes it possible to isolate mechanisms that are entangled in the full Navier-Stokes equations. His work also introduced the Burgers vector as a measure of a dislocation in a crystal lattice.[ref]
