Lunar eclipse

A <lunar eclipse> occurs when <Earth> blocks some or all of the direct sunlight reaching the <Moon>. It requires alignment near full Moon; the <orbital inclination> usually carries the <Moon> clear of <Earth>'s shadow. Ordinary <lunar phases> instead arise from viewing different amounts of the sunlit hemisphere. https://science.nasa.gov/moon/eclipses/[NASA: lunar eclipse geometry]{ref}.
