Magma ocean

A large, potentially global region of extensive silicate melting in a young or strongly heated rocky body. Its crystallization involves <latent heat>, crystal settling or flotation, and chemical fractionation. An early <magma ocean> is distinct from the later, mostly solid <mantle convection> of a planet. The Moon's proposed example is the <lunar magma ocean>.
