A large, potentially global region of extensive silicate melting in a young or strongly heated rocky body. Its crystallization involves latent heat, crystal settling or flotation, and chemical fractionation. An early magma ocean is distinct from the later, mostly solid mantle convection of a planet. The Moon's proposed example is the lunar magma ocean.
