Moment of inertia of a uniform solid hemisphere (source code)

= Moment of inertia of a uniform solid hemisphere
{title2=$I_G=83ma^2/320$}

The centroid of a uniform solid hemisphere of radius $a$ lies $3a/8$ from its flat face. About a diameter of the underlying sphere parallel to that face, its <moment of inertia> is $2ma^2/5$. The <parallel axis theorem> therefore gives $I_G=2ma^2/5-m(3a/8)^2=83ma^2/320$ about the parallel centroidal axis. A thin hemispherical shell has a different centroid and inertia.
