The centroid of a uniform solid hemisphere of radius a lies 3a/8 from its flat face. About a diameter of the underlying sphere parallel to that face, its moment of inertia is 2ma2/5. The parallel axis theorem therefore gives IG=2ma2/5−m(3a/8)2=83ma2/320 about the parallel centroidal axis. A thin hemispherical shell has a different centroid and inertia.
