Monotonicity of the normalized extremal number (source code)

= Monotonicity of the normalized extremal number

For every fixed graph $H$, the sequence
$$
\frac{\operatorname{ex}(n,H)}{\binom n2}
$$
is nonincreasing once $n\geq2$. Indeed, choose a uniformly random $m$-vertex <induced subgraph> of an extremal $H$-free graph on $n$ vertices. It remains $H$-free and has expected edge count
$$
\operatorname{ex}(n,H)\frac{\binom m2}{\binom n2},
$$
which cannot exceed $\operatorname{ex}(m,H)$.
