<Mordhay Avron> was a biochemist who investigated how <cells> adapt to their environment. In a 1973 study with <Ami Ben-Amotz>, he examined <osmoregulation> in the salt-tolerant alga <Dunaliella parva>. Measuring both intracellular <glycerol> and cell volume let the investigators estimate the internal <glycerol> concentration, rather than confuse the amount of a <solute> with its concentration.<The Role of Glycerol in the Osmotic Regulation of the Halophilic Alga Dunaliella parva by Ami Ben-Amotz and Mordhay Avron>[Abstract: intracellular-volume measurements and glycerol concentration]{ref}
After the surrounding salt concentration changed, intracellular <glycerol> adjusted over about 90 minutes. The result supported metabolic adjustment of an internal <solute> as a way to balance an external osmotic challenge.<The Role of Glycerol in the Osmotic Regulation of the Halophilic Alga Dunaliella parva by Ami Ben-Amotz and Mordhay Avron>[Salt-shift experiment and interpretation of glycerol formation/degradation]{ref}
