Mordhay Avron was a biochemist who investigated how cells adapt to their environment. In a 1973 study with Ami Ben-Amotz, he examined osmoregulation in the salt-tolerant alga Dunaliella parva. Measuring both intracellular glycerol and cell volume let the investigators estimate the internal glycerol concentration, rather than confuse the amount of a solute with its concentration.[ref]
After the surrounding salt concentration changed, intracellular glycerol adjusted over about 90 minutes. The result supported metabolic adjustment of an internal solute as a way to balance an external osmotic challenge.[ref]
