For z∈Z, the eigenspaces of ρ(z) are invariant under G, since every representing matrix commutes with ρ(z). Irreducibility forces one such eigenspace to be all of W, so ρ(z)=χ(z)I. The multiplication law gives χ(zz′)=χ(z)χ(z′), making χ a one-dimensional, hence irreducible, group representation of Z. Therefore
ResZGW=(dimW)χ.
