Integrating the population equation over the line and using vanishing boundary flux gives M˙=−μM, where M(t)=∫n(x,t)dx. Since M(0)=Q, one has M(t)=Qe−μt. On the other hand the similarity substitution x=λ(t)η gives
M(t)=e−μt∫Rf(η)dη.
(1)
Consequently
∫Rf(η)dη=Q.
(2)
The decay condition is on the nonlinear diffusive flux nnx; compact support also satisfies it.
