b
For a prime number p, the defining finite sum for the Hecke operator simplifies to
Tpf=pk−1f(pz)+p1∑b=0p−1f((z+b)/p).
(1)
The first summand has no q1 term. In the second, summing the pth roots of unity selects precisely the terms whose index is divisible by p, and its q1 coefficient is ap. Comparing with Tpf=λ(p)f, using a1=1, gives λ(p)=ap. This also follows from the general coefficient computation in part (a).
