For k=1, put r=sinχ. The spatial metric tensor becomes
a2[dχ2+sin2χ(dθ2+sin2θdϕ2)].
(1)
The global closed spatial slice is a 3-sphere with 0≤χ≤π; the original r chart covers only a hemisphere, so two charts are needed. A circle at fixed χ in an equatorial angular plane has circumference 2πasinχ. The full spatial volume is
4πa3∫0πsin2χdχ=2π2a3.
(2)
Integrating a single r∈[0,1] chart without its second copy would give only half this volume.
