Minimizing ∥Y−Xθ∥2 gives the normal equations XTXθ=XTY. Full column rank makes XTX invertible, so
θ=(XTX)−1XTY.
(1)
With the hat matrix H=X(XTX)−1XT, the residual is ε=(I−H)ε. The symmetric projection I−H has rank n−p, hence
σ2εTε∼χn−p2,σ2=n−pεTε
(2)
and the latter estimator is unbiased.
