1E
The rank-nullity theorem says that for a linear map T:V→W with finite-dimensional domain, dimV=dimkerT+dimimT. Apply it to β∣imα. Its image is im(βα) and its kernel is imα∩kerβ, so
dimimα=dimim(βα)+dim(imα∩kerβ).
(1)
Since im(αγ)⊆imα,
dim(im(αγ)∩kerβ)≤dim(imα∩kerβ).
(2)
Using the preceding identity for both restrictions and rearranging gives
dimim(βα)+dimim(αγ)≤dimimα+dimim(βαγ).
