For x,z∈Bρ(y), the open balls satisfy Bρ(x)⊂B3ρ(z)⊂B4ρ(y). Nonnegativity and the mean value property for harmonic functions give
u(x)=ωnρn1∫Bρ(x)u≤ωnρn1∫B3ρ(z)u=3nu(z).
(1)
Taking the supremum over x and the infimum over z proves the Harnack inequality for harmonic functions:
Bρ(y)supu≤3nBρ(y)infu.
(2)
This includes a zero infimum, which forces u=0 on the smaller ball.
