By asymptotic Riemann–Roch and the preceding bounds for higher sheaf cohomology,
h0(X,mD)−h1(X,mD)=n!Dnmn+O(mn−1).
(1)
A nef divisor satisfies Dn≥0: for a fixed ample divisor A, the divisors D+εA are ample for positive rational ε, and continuity of the intersection product gives the inequality as ε→0. If h0(X,mD)=0 eventually, the left side is nonpositive. Dividing by mn forces Dn=0, since h1≥0 and Dn≥0. The same identity then gives h1(X,mD)=O(mn−1).
