Distinguish the cylindrical radius R from the spherical radius r=R2+z2. A Taylor expansion of the central gravitational potential for ∣z∣/R≪1 gives
Φ=−RGM(1+R2z2)−1/2=−RGM+2R3GMz2+O(R5GMz4).
(1)
Thus the usual thin-disk expansion of the stellar gravitational potential is
Φ(R,z)≃−RGM+21ΩK2(R)z2,ΩK2=R3GM.
(2)
The vertical acceleration is −∂zΦ=−ΩK2z. The first term can be omitted when considering only vertical forces at fixed R, but must be retained for radial dynamics.
