Define the smooth function
F:Rn+1⟶R,F(x)=∥x∥2.
(1)
At x∈F−1(1) its derivative is
DxF(v)=2x⋅v.
(2)
This linear map is surjective because x=0; for example, DxF(x)=2. Hence one is a regular value, and the regular level set theorem makes
Sn=F−1(1)
(3)
an embedded codimension-one submanifold of Rn+1. Its tangent space is the kernel of the derivative:
TxSn=kerDxF={v:x⋅v=0}=x⊥.
(4)
This is the unit sphere as a regular level set.
