The sum is nonempty because A and B are nonempty. It is a bounded set: if ∣a∣≤MA and ∣b∣≤MB, then ∣a+b∣≤MA+MB.
To prove that it is a closed set, let xj=aj+bj∈A+B be a convergent sequence with xj→x. By the Heine-Borel theorem, A is a compact set, so (aj) has a convergent subsequence ajr→a∈A. Then
bjr=xjr−ajr⟶x−a.
(1)
Since B is closed, x−a∈B, and hence x=a+(x−a)∈A+B. Therefore A+B is nonempty, closed and bounded, so A+B∈K.
