If a test function φ has integral zero, then
ψ(x)=∫−∞xφ(t)dt
(1)
is another compactly supported smooth test function with ψ′=φ. Hence v′=0 implies ⟨v,φ⟩=−⟨v′,ψ⟩=0 for every such φ.
Choose a test function η with integral one. For arbitrary φ, the function φ−η∫φ has zero integral, so
⟨v,φ⟩=⟨v,η⟩∫Rφ(x)dx.
(2)
Thus v is the constant distribution ⟨v,η⟩. This proves a distribution with zero derivative is constant.
