The homogeneous linear recurrence relation
yn+2−4yn+1+4yn=0
(1)
has characteristic polynomial (r−2)2, so
yn(h)=(C+Dn)2n.
(2)
For a particular solution, substitute yn=an+b. The left-hand side becomes
an+(b−2a),
(3)
so matching n gives a=1 and b=2. Hence
yn=(C+Dn)2n+n+2.
(4)
The conditions y0=1 and y1=0 give C=−1 and D=−1/2. Therefore
yn=n+2−(1+2n)2n.
