The quotient topology on X is
TX={U⊆X:π−1(U) is open in X}.
(1)
Since inverse images preserve arbitrary unions and finite intersections,
π−1(⋃αUα)=⋃απ−1(Uα),π−1(U∩V)=π−1(U)∩π−1(V).
(2)
Also π−1(∅)=∅ and π−1(X)=X. The displayed collection therefore satisfies all the topology axioms.
