A momentum-shell renormalization group transformation consists of three steps. First split ϕ=ϕ−+ϕ+ into slow modes with ∣k∣<Λ/ζ and fast modes with Λ/ζ<∣k∣<Λ, and integrate out ϕ+ to obtain a Wilsonian effective action for ϕ−. Next rescale momenta by k′=ζk, equivalently coordinates by x′=x/ζ, to restore the cutoff to Λ. Finally rescale the field to restore the chosen normalization of the gradient term. Repeating these operations produces a renormalization-group flow of every permitted mass and coupling.
