Take positive y vertically downward. For a short string element, the transverse tension resultant is Tyxxdx, while gravity and linear drag contribute μgdx and −2kμytdx. Newton's second law gives
μyttdx=Tyxxdx−2kμytdx+μgdx.
(1)
Since T=μc2, the damped wave equation is
ytt+2kyt−c2yxx=g,y(0,t)=y(l,t)=0.
(2)
Choosing upward displacement reverses the sign of the gravity term.
