For the lower semicircle
z(x)=−a2−x2,1+z′2=−za.
(1)
For a general potential, the Beltrami first integral is
1+z′2ρΦ(z)+λ=C.
(2)
Substitution of the semicircle therefore requires
−az(ρΦ(z)+λ)=C.
(3)
Thus, up to an arbitrary additive constant and a multiplicative strength,
Φ(z)=Φ0+zA.
(4)
The additive constant is absorbed by the length multiplier. The semicircle has length πa, as required.
