α(x0​)=1,α(xn+1​)=xn​.

The universal property of a free group extends this assignment to an endomorphism of F(X). It is surjective because every xn​ is the image of xn+1​, but it is not injective because x0​=1 lies in its kernel. Thus F(N) is not Hopfian.
